"A New Year....."

With such a bleak winter to get through, I decided to work on some landscape ideas from drawings made during a recent train journey.

Passing through mile upon mile of white landscape, peppered only with dark sheltered areas, furrows in fields, and the occasional tree, I couldn’t resist interpreting these pencil notes with black Indian ink back in the studio.

I selected some luscious Hahnemuhle printmaking ‘board’ to flood water directly onto the paper, closely followed by ink poured from the pot.

Not for the faint hearted, but with the aid of a low level side light from my Anglepoise lamp, I could control the floods as the light adequately showed all wet areas as very bright and shiny. Manoeuvring the paper as well is a great aid as could guide the pigment where I wanted it to go.

Producing several images in one sitting, gave me plenty of material to take the ideas for another walk, although a lot of drying time was required.

My plan was to tear and fold variously and ultimately with the addition of black thread, I have attached them to background paper and intertwined thread carefully on one small piece, to mimicking cobwebs - although totally out of scale of course.

The hawe frost one particular day was so severe that the cobwebs appeared as if created with thick white wool crocheted beautifully, especially on iron railings where they hung and swayed in the freezing but gentle breeze. No one could create that as well as nature herself, so I decided not to try.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Think Ink swimming in water.......

This exciting weekend will encourage the use of the wet into wet technique with more than a hint of the unexpected. It is only by taking risks that extraordinary rewards will emerge. We shall explore the delicate blend and balance of water to pigment to ink, and discover some amazing outcomes as we search for ways to interpret our surroundings. We shall focus on the oncoming Spring and the tracery of new growth.

19 - 21 May 2023
A Contemporary Watercolour Workshop - borderline abstract with ink on the sidelines........

A contemporary workshop designed specifically to make one think out of the box. Learning to see things differently is just the first step.......when all is not exactly as it appears, and where a certain amount of paper manipulation may just be encouraged.....
